The driveline is what turns your axles, and your axle is what turns your wheels. There are different types of drivelines depending on whether your vehicle has rear wheel drive, front wheel drive or four-wheel drive.
The driveline connects to the transmission and differential through a series of universal joints.
Most universal and CV joints are sealed and don’t require periodic lubrication. However, it’s extremely important to have them inspected every time your vehicle is up on a lift. Any crack or leak in the joint’s protective housing, or boot, can result in severe damage to your vehicle.
Needless to say, your Automotive Services Guys will inspect universal and CV joint boots every time you bring your car in.
If your vehicle shudders during acceleration, that could be a sign of a loose U-joint or a faulty center bearing. Similarly, if you hear a loud clunk during shifting, it may be time to have the U-joints replaced. Roughness, clicking noises or a squeaking sound at low speeds may also indicate driveline trouble.
These sounds may also indicate something other than driveline problems. The best course of action is to see if the noise persists, and if it does, bring your vehicle in to see your Automotive Services Guys.
